This summer, California’s finest water polo athletes will make a splash at the Paris Olympics. The U.S. men’s and women’s Olympic water polo teams are packing their bags for France with rosters almost exclusively composed of Californians, with a significant number hailing from the Bay Area. That’s right, our local pools have produced some serious aquatic talent, and they’re ready to take on the world.
Monte Vista High alum and three-time Olympic gold medalist Maggie Steffens credits the Bay Area for her success, and she’s eyeing a fourth gold in Paris. The region’s swimming culture is woven into its DNA, with countless recreational pools and a community that fosters early involvement in the sport. John Roemer, the acclaimed Miramonte High School coach, reminisces about casual water polo games that launched multiple Division-I careers, including that of his own daughter, Jewel. These backyard beginnings have set the stage for Olympic dreams, proving that sometimes all it takes is a splash and a bit of boredom to inspire greatness.
